Public Policy, Legislative, and Governmental Affairs

Lawyers at Potts & Reilly, LLP have served in elective office, as advisors to governors and other statewide officials, state agency staff, legislative staff, management at non-governmental organizations, and as chairs of the Texas and Travis County Bar Associations' Administrative Law Sections. We have the knowledge and contacts to assist you with federal, state and local governmental entities. We frequently assemble, or work with, teams from other disciplines or governmental representatives in complex matters.

Some of our past work has included sucessful efforts to assist in passing the Private Real Property Rights Protection Act, passing legislation to protect groundwater ownership rights for certain landowners, obtaining authorization to permit a 40,000 acre site for the beneficial land application of biosolids, and assisting in the passage (or defeat, if necessary) numerous other legislative enactments and amendments.

We also provide legislative monitoring services for clients, to alert them to key proposals that might affect their businesses. In addition we provide clients with legislative history to determine legislative intent, a key element in interpreting statutes. We are located blocks away from the state capitol and have access to electronic resources to obtain the history and copies of legislative journals, documents, and audio records.
